[Express youself vs. Cultivate my mind]
In Korean culture, we learn to being modest, and humble all the times. For instance, ripen rice is heading to down as korean proverb. It means humility is the important lesson in korean life style. even though you're very successful in your life, you don't show off your ablity for looking down other people. However, when you need to show your capablity, you do your job perfectly without being snoby or cocky.
Since I've lived in U.S.A for six years, I met many people who were very confident themselves. They were fully expressing themselves who they were. I have no problem meeting people who loves themselves more than anything. As my cultural background, I feel this is cultural difference between two countries.
[Respect Old People]
Another interesting concept is respecting old people in korean culture. we do use the honorific for old people. When i learned in english, everyone use you as second person. In korea, we do distinguish honorific between people. Another example, we learned give up your seat for old people or diablities all the time in the bus, train, subway anywhere in public space. It's very common culture in Korea.

I have to say that when I came here I experienced a cultural shock when I saw how people wont give up a seat to elderly people or pregnant women. It's just terrible to watch how they even don't bother to give up their seats, or even worse if they do, they pretend that they are sleeping...
ReplyDeleteI agree with Tanya, I always see how people won't give up their seat for the people who really need it. In my country the policy not allow them to do this way, they must leave the seat for the elderly people or pregnant women.
